RFI vs ASI
An RFI asks for clarification; an ASI issues clarification or supplemental direction from the architect when the change does not affect contract time or cost.
RFI
- Asking a design question
- Documenting an information gap
- Routing a question to the design team
ASI
- Issuing minor clarification
- Supplementing drawings or specifications
- Documenting architect direction
Key differences
| Point | RFI | ASI |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts it | Usually the contractor or subcontractor. | Usually the architect or design team. |
| Primary purpose | Request an answer before work proceeds. | Provide formal clarification or supplemental instruction. |
| Cost or time impact | May uncover a change, but does not approve one by itself. | Typically used only when cost and time do not change. |
Example in context
A contractor submits an RFI about a missing finish note. The architect answers and later issues an ASI with the clarified detail for the project record.
