Construction Document Control Process

Document control keeps construction teams working from current information. The process is only effective when revisions, distribution, and superseded documents are tightly managed.

Process steps

  1. Step 1

    Establish the source of truth

Define where current drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, changes, and closeout records live.

  2. Step 2

    Track revisions

Maintain drawing logs, specification revisions, addenda, bulletins, and superseded document records.

  3. Step 3

    Control distribution

Use distribution lists and transmittals so affected parties receive updates and acknowledge critical changes.

  4. Step 4

    Connect related records

Link RFIs, ASIs, CCDs, submittals, and change orders to the drawings or specs they affect.

  5. Step 5

    Audit field use

Confirm field teams, trades, and vendors are using current documents before installing work.
